What else belongs on your map of “health”?
January 29, 2024

First of all, let’s talk a bit about the word “health.” For many of us, this word could be quite charged. So before we continue, I will share my definition of health and invite you to come up with your definition, too.

Would you share it with me?  And as usual, take your time with reading through this Love Letter. Take it in small doable bits? Every word in it is felt and breathed with.

Living in a neurodivergent body-mind with a glitchy immune system, my definition of “health” is far from normative health, normative bodies, and normative nervous systems.

For me, “health” means my Natural Blueprint Essence, MY optimal way of being, MY resonant way of being in this world. In my physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, energetic, and relational human experience.

Coming into alignment with your Blueprint could be a lifelong exploration, and most of the time, your Blueprint is something different from what you thought it should be.

Meeting your Blueprint can be uncomfortable. It’s not all warm fuzzies and sweet roses.

In the process of repatterning and reorienting to your Optimal Way of Being, you might find out that all this time, you have been doing undoable things that are way outside of your capacity.

And so we get to be in practice with our Range Of Resonance (range of presence, range of regulation, or window of tolerance if you will). Every day.

  • What capacity do I have to be present today?
  • What capacity for care do I have today?
  • Widening your range and developing maps of health larger than the maps of difficulty is how we can live a sustainable life.

So, here is a practice suggestion for you:

For the first round…

What belongs on your map of health?

What is your fast, medium, and slow health?

Notice if you start with all the “good” and “worthy” things. Things that are officially acknowledged as “good for you” in the normative health and wellness industry.

Like running or weightlifting (fast health), walking in Nature or cooking with friends and family (medium health), or meditating (slow health). All great things! Celebrating, if you have them available in your toolbox.

Now, for the second round…

What if it doesn’t have to be “good” or “worthy”?

What if we don’t get to judge our (or someone else’s) map?

Could there be a possibility that your map of health could also include your guilty pleasures?

Like rewatching your favorite show for the 4th time because it feels so soothing. Or spending your day on a couch not doing anything productive?

What soothes you?

What brings you (secret) joy?

What gives you (guilty) pleasure? What else can be a part of your map?

And for the third round…

If you feel into the tidal nature of your being, is there a possibility that crappy days belong on your map of health, too? Could it be possible that feeling separated and disconnected is a part of the cycle, too?

And so I am going to leave it at that. It could be an interesting practice to begin mapping out your “health” on a piece of paper and then keep coming back to it over and over. Over time, you will have a representation of how your range is widening and your capacity for health is growing.

I see so much shaming of dysregulation, especially in the healing and wellness circles. Dysregulation shows up as a protector. There is so much intelligence in it. And within that, building our capacity for health (whatever your definition of it is), support, and resource might be the most potent medicine there is.

If you want to share your experience around this (include another human in these dynamics), I am here for it.I am also here as a layer of support as you begin to learn some new things about yourself.
