On Flight
June 17, 2024

Do you want to guess how my own exploration of the Flight response started?

Correct.

It started with “I don’t think I have any Flight… This is not something I do”…

But guess what?

I am the walking embodiment of Flight.

I’ve been even fleeing from writing this letter for at least a week now 😁

So let me tell you a bit more about Flight.

First, we need to uncouple Flight from Fight.

Most often than not you will find these two different threat responses described as one: A Fight-Flight response. Which is not the case at all.

Yes, they both have a physiology for mobilisation.

But Fight stays to defend.

And Flight flees away.

Flight is moving away from perceived or actual threat with panic, fear, anxiety, worry, or concern.

There can be different depths of Flight from restless fidgeting to a full blown panic attack to physically extracting yourself from a situation.

Anxiety is a form of Flight.

Spiritual bypassing is a form of Flight.

Avoiding difficult conversations is a form of Flight.

Somatic bypassing is a form of Flight.

Mental dissociation during a meeting is a form of Flight.

Chronic inescapable conditions is a form of trapped Flight.

And so, we get to practice escape on purpose with the intention of bringing it back into the range of resonance (aka regulation).

We get to build in tides into our escape.

How can we leave, and wait for the tide to return?

How can we practice disappearing and escaping on purpose?

Creating conditions for the authentic return.
